- Stick to plain text, don't even try to put any markup in there.
- Allow markup and insist that it be well-formed.

btw, I agree wholeheartedly with Norm's arguments on this, and
in my own apps think in terms of 1. most of the time, though the
door is always open to 2. as an XML API is always at hand.
