FOAF was used as a counter-example in what was otherwise a good post from David Janes about syndication adoption, virtuous cycles and microformats. I've just realised I didn't actually tackle his virtuous-increment angle re. FOAF. Bah, whatever, in the process of responding I got an analogy that might work:

In the same way XHTML acts as a

substrate for microformats, RDF is the base for micromodels.

Microformats are being designed in such a way that the syntax of each

can be (relatively) freely mixed in a document. RDF vocabularies are

designed in such a way that the model of each can be freely mixed on

the Web.
