MÃ¥rten Mickos commented on my last post, obviously a bit bothered by the tone of some of the responses to his talk, and I'm as guilty as anyone. I think the reaction is mostly shock and self-recrimination that the semweb community has been so poor at communicating what it's about. Apologies when that comes across as a personal attack.
But let's face it, what kind of a reaction would there be if Google announced they planned to develop an small, efficient general-purpose engine for storing related information which anyone could run on anyone's desktop or server, featuring a little language to access the information... (...did they already?)
MÃ¥rten mentions the architecture of participation like that of open source as the way forward - absolutely. I wonder if he could be encouraged to contact the Semantic Web Education and Outreach Interest Group (or vice versa, hint hint), could be mutually beneficial.
